Old Steel
Old Steel is a study of the aging and weathering of coatings on a variety of steel forms. I built each sculpture out of 16-gauge sheet metal. Then I painted them with layers of industrial paint—sanding, wire-brushing, and abrading in between coats to reveal the layers of paint, primer, and bare metal beneath. I was inspired to make the series after I encountered a beautifully rusted and paint-chipped old truck fender that captured my imagination.
